Exclusive: Kanikka Kapur opens up about her journey and her debut with Sooraj Barjatya’s Dono
You may have crushed on Kanikka Kapur on Amazon Prime Video’s Immature or have seen her Rajshri Productions Dono. Kanikka Kapur has done it all. This charming actress made her Bollywood debut alongside Sunny Deol's son, Rajveer Deol, in Dono. Kanikka Kapur is someone who was born into a family of IAS officers and started having an interest in acting at a very young age. She said, “We had gone to see Ta Ra Rum Pum. So, suddenly, the kids realise that they don't have a lot of money, and then they start saving money. So, I got inspired by that, and when I went to my house, my parents always used to tell me that when you leave the room, always switch off the fans or lights, but I never used to listen to them, but after that movie, I started doing so. I knew the power of cinema, but I never knew if I could act until I actually did theatre.”

"Then, when I did theatre in college, I realised that when I started acting, it made me feel very free because otherwise, as a person, I'm a little restricted and I'm a little shy. But when I act, I can be whoever I want to be. Any character. And that feeling is what still drives me. I love acting, and it makes me feel free knowing the power that films have. I think that's what motivated me to start acting, and that's why I'm still here, and I plan to stay here,” she added.

She further opened up about her struggling stage and revealed that after winning a lot of beauty pageants, she was signed up by an agency through which she made her debut in a Telugu film called Tippu. Even though she considers herself not a good actor at this stage, it was a learning stage, and she learned how to face the camera. She further added that since she wanted to work in something in Hindi, she came to Mumbai and started working in advertisements. She added, “Then I got a reality show called India's Next Superstar, an acting-based competition. And there I got a lot of guidance. That is when I met Mukesh Chhabra sir. He was one of the mentors. He really helped me. Then we met people like Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty. They were judging us. So that really helped me a lot. I did that. After that, I did a TV show for Sony's Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2. That gave me a lot of love from the audience. Then I did a web show with TVF called Immature 2. And now I have shot Immature 3, which is coming soon, and then I got Dono.”

Talking about her audition for her character Alina in Dono, Kanikka said, “So, Mukesh Chhabrra’s assistant had called me, “We are doing the casting for this project,” and at that time I was in Delhi because at that time it was Corona’s second wave period. When I was on call, I couldn’t hear that the movie was about Rajshri, and I just gave the audition very casually. And that’s why I think I got it, because I didn’t have that much pressure. Due to COVID, I gave my first audition on Zoom in front of director Avnish S. Barjatya and his team.”

Kanikka further revealed her experience of working with Suraj Barjatya and said, “Actually, I learned a lot of lessons from him. He was my favourite person on the sets, Matlab. I used to really look up to him; he’s so humble. What I learned from him is that if I ever become successful, I will always be humble. I will also treat others as he treats everyone. The one thing that stuck with me was that he used to say, ‘When you are in sets, leave your personal self at home and then come on set because you’re like a clean slate.’“

She also talked about her rapport with Sunny Deol’s son Rajveer Deol on the sets of Dono and said, “According to the film, my character and Rajveer’s character were childhood friends, so to have that chemistry, When I first met him, it came naturally to us because when I first met him during the last screen test, which was in Rajshri's office, Avinish (the director) told me that just like your characters, i.e., Alina is an outgoing person while Rajveer’s character Dev is shy, in real life we are like this. So, when I first met him, I was like myself—a talkative person. After some time when Rajveer opened up, he was a very sweet person, used to crack the wittiest of jokes, and was very humble.”
