"Then, when I did theatre in college, I realised that when I started acting, it made me feel very free because otherwise, as a person, I'm a little restricted and I'm a little shy. But when I act, I can be whoever I want to be. Any character. And that feeling is what still drives me. I love acting, and it makes me feel free knowing the power that films have. I think that's what motivated me to start acting, and that's why I'm still here, and I plan to stay here,” she added.
She further opened up about her struggling stage and revealed that after winning a lot of beauty pageants, she was signed up by an agency through which she made her debut in a Telugu film called Tippu. Even though she considers herself not a good actor at this stage, it was a learning stage, and she learned how to face the camera. She further added that since she wanted to work in something in Hindi, she came to Mumbai and started working in advertisements. She added, “Then I got a reality show called India's Next Superstar, an acting-based competition. And there I got a lot of guidance. That is when I met Mukesh Chhabra sir. He was one of the mentors. He really helped me. Then we met people like Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty. They were judging us. So that really helped me a lot. I did that. After that, I did a TV show for Sony's Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2. That gave me a lot of love from the audience. Then I did a web show with TVF called Immature 2. And now I have shot Immature 3, which is coming soon, and then I got Dono.”
Talking about her audition for her character Alina in Dono, Kanikka said, “So, Mukesh Chhabrra’s assistant had called me, “We are doing the casting for this project,” and at that time I was in Delhi because at that time it was Corona’s second wave period. When I was on call, I couldn’t hear that the movie was about Rajshri, and I just gave the audition very casually. And that’s why I think I got it, because I didn’t have that much pressure. Due to COVID, I gave my first audition on Zoom in front of director Avnish S. Barjatya and his team.”
Kanikka further revealed her experience of working with Suraj Barjatya and said, “Actually, I learned a lot of lessons from him. He was my favourite person on the sets, Matlab. I used to really look up to him; he’s so humble. What I learned from him is that if I ever become successful, I will always be humble. I will also treat others as he treats everyone. The one thing that stuck with me was that he used to say, ‘When you are in sets, leave your personal self at home and then come on set because you’re like a clean slate.’“
