As we await the upcoming Filmfare Awards take a look at a few facts related to the long-running, prestigious ceremony through the decades.
Gully Boy (2019) - 13 Filmfare Awards
A 22-year-old boy named Murad from a ghetto in Bombay, India, is the protagonist of the movie Gully Boy. His parents, who worked as drivers, put a lot of effort into getting him an education so he could earn a white collar job. Murad discovers that rapping is his calling in the meantime. Genuine Hip Hop is a relatively new phenomenon in India and, like everywhere else in the world, it is emerging from the streets. For the colonised poor of India, art is a far-off ideal. This story follows Murad as he goes from discovering his love for rap to pursuing his dream and unintentionally transcending his class. The movie features a street rap from Mumbai's back alleys. The poetry is aware of the socioeconomic makeup of the city and emphasises the struggles minorities' marginalised youth confront. Gully Boy impressed critics and audiences alike; and became a sensation overnight. It would be fair to say that Zoya Akhtar’s directorial venture managed to tick almost all the right boxes. Gully Boy holds the record for the most Filmfare awards won by a single film- with 13 awards to its name. It won the following awards:

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) - 10 Filmfare Awards
We all know it as the eternal romantic film of Indian cinema and it’s no surprise that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was also one of the most successful at the Filmfare Awards too. Apart from winning the Best Film and Best Director awards the movie also won major acting awards for Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Farida Jalal and Anupam Kher. Awards for Udit Narayan, Anand Bakshi and Aditya Chopra and Javed Siddiqui’s writing upped the tally to ten. Even today, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a film that people are happy to watch over and over again. Shah Rukh Khan mesmerised everyone with his acting in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. The film added largely to his career and established him as the ultimate king of romance. It seems like the actor was against the thought of being a part of romantic films. SRK had posted on his social media account, "I was so anti doing love stories cos I thought I am not good with them. I remember Yashji telling me, till u love, nobody will love u back. So true" [sic]. However, it seems like DDLJ is remembered as a fond memory. In a nostalgic mood while shooting for Happy New Year, SRK had posted, "Watching Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge….while shooting for Farah Khan. Remember how much fun we had making “ruk ja o Dil Deewane…nostalgic" [sic] Kajol also recently spoke about the film in a recent interview with a leading daily. She said, “I am grateful that everybody remembers it till today because it was a very long time ago. So definitely it feels good. That film was special. That was a very nice picture. We made it with love. Fortunately for us, it turned out to be a fantastic and well-loved film."

The breathtaking sets and costumes made this movie a magnum opus. No surprise it took home 10 big awards and it still remains one of the most successful movies to date. When Shah Rukh Khan received the award for Devdas, the otherwise witty and charming man seemed rather emotional. Speaking about it, he said, “I am a little emotional today because I have been here for 11 years. I am going in for a back surgery. Not a good thing to go in for. Even that has changed. Bombay has given me so much love and Mumbai has given me even more love. It has given me the name, fame, awards, money, income tax raids, CBI interrogations and ladies claiming to be my mothers. But it has all been marvelous. I dedicated my first award to my mother up there and now I have become a father myself. I hope my two-and-a-half-month-old kid is watching this on television.
